I think, more than any Monday I have seen in a while, we are going to need an MRT today.

We have a little conference coming to Seoul this week…you may have heard of it. A few important people are gonna show up and chat about some stuff. I have some thoughts. I may discuss them (ad nauseam) in the future.

Anyhow…on w/ the show.

If you haven’t played before:

  • Turn on your iPod or other music playing device.
  • Turn it to “shuffle.
  • Blog (or drop into comments if you don’t have a blog or Facebook/LiveJournal/Dreamwidth/any medium for such things) the first ten songs that come up!
  • Share!
  • Enjoy!

I am not playing by the rules, and you don’t have to either. I first heard this done at Feministe by Jill, who did it on Fridays, and I adopted Natalia’s idea of doing it on Mondays, because my Mondays needed a lift more than Fridays.

  1. To Binge (featuring Little Dragon) — Gorillaz
  2. Viva La Vida (Coldplay Cover) — Lady Gaga
  3. Eternal Flame — The Bangles
  4. Follow Me — 2NE1

Michael Franti & Spearhead — Say Hey (I Love You)

Video Description: Filmed at Vigário Geral favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the video features Michael singin’ his tune while people are dancing, singing, drumming (on a variety of really cool drums), running, jumping, and children are playing in the streets, in the buildings, and on the beach.

Well, a flood, an internet crisis, and now, catch-up time!

  2. If You Leave Me Now — Chicago
  3. Maneater — Nelly Fertado
  4. Stronger — Britney Spears
  5. Zebra — John Butler Trio
  6. Invincible — MC Mong
  7. Beautiful, Dirty, Rich — Lady Gaga

  9. New Genious — Gorillaz

If iTunes hasn’t broken up with me, as it seems to have with a few of my friends here in Korea (some weird thing going on) I am hoping to explore some new music suggestions soon.

In the mean time, how ’bouts a vid, huh?

One of my favorite Britney songs, “Stronger”.

Video: Britney, close up of her well made-up face looking at some dood who gives her a shrug as we see another woman, presumably a new relationship after ending one with Britney, wrapping her arms around him. Britney says “Whatever”, and walks away. She cuts to an all black stage where she is dressed in all sparkly black and has obtained a metal chair, and proceeds to do a kickin’ dance routine with the chair that mimics many actions taking place in the mostly white-decorated club scene that is frequently cut to. In the club scenes, a rotating platform allows Britney to continue walking away from this dood as he falls and trips over things while trying to follow her.

Then, she ruins the whole video by choosing a crap car to drive, but we get the message that she is still doing really awesome despite poor car choice, but she gets bonus forgiveness for at least opting for the vintage Mustang for her speeding through empty desert scene. She stops the car and gets out and dances a bit in the rain until the scene freezes, and the rain is repelled, presumably by Britney’s awesomeness, and she is dry again.

Lyrics:

Hush… just stop
there’s nothing you can do or say (baby)
I’ve had enough
I’m not your property as from today (baby)

you might think that I won’t make it on my own
but now I’m

CHORUS
Stronger than yesterday
now it’s nothin’ but my way
my loneliness ain’t killing me no more
I…I’m stronger

Than I ever thought that I could be (baby)
I used to go with the flow
didn’t really care ’bout me

You might think that I can’t take it
but your wrong
‘Cause now I’m

Chorus
Stronger than yesterday
now it’s nothin’ but my way
my loneliness ain’t killing me no more
I…I’m stronger

come on now
oh yeah
here I go
on my own
I don’t need no body
better off alone

here I go on my own now
I don’t need no body not any body
here I go

alright

here I go

stronger than yesterday
it’s nothin’ but my way
my loneliness ain’t killin’ me no more

A Message From Lady Gaga to The Senate

Note from imissedtumblr: This transcript is going to be quick & dirty because I have a meeting in 30 minutes. None of the names are spelled correctly, I’m sorry.  (I’m typing this part at the end and I have to run.)  If someone has the time to clean this up, I’d really appreciate it.

This is a black & White video with Lady Gaga sitting in front of a US-flag, looking very serious and speaking directly to the camera.

Transcript by Anna, slightly edited by Yours, Truly:

To my fellow Americans, the Senate, Senators John McCain, Arizona, Mitch McConnell, Kentucy, James Inhofe, Oklahoma, Jeff Sessions, Alabama, and youth, all over the world who are watching

Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is a law that was created in 1993 that prevents gays from serving openly in the military.  Since then, 14,000 Americans have been discharged from the forces, refused the right to serve their country, and sent home, regardless of honourable service or how valuable they may have been to their units.  400 soldiers under President Obama’s administration alone were discharged under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

Advocacy by organizations such as the SLDN, the Service Members Legal Defense Network, have showing the inconsistent and unconstitutional enforcement of this law.

Don’t Ask Don’t Tell asks that serving gay and lesbian soldiers hide and keep private their sexual orientation under the protection and promise that the government will not ask them to tell or disclose their sexuality. SLDN’s advocacy proves that these soldiers are being searched, superiors are going through their emails and private belongings, calling family members and operating based on assumptions.  Ultimately the law is being enforced using gay profiling.

And gay soldiers have become targets.

In short, not only is the law unconstitutional, it’s not being properly or fairly enforced by the government.  Our fight is a continuum of the ever-present equal rights movement.  Every day we fight to abolish laws that harbour hatred and discrimination. Against all people.  Laws that infringe on our civil liberties. Unfair laws that, like Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, were put in place to eliminate friction and violence but in the end, only delay the process of ending this most serious prejudice.

I am here to be a voice for my generation, not the generation of the senators that are voting, but the youth of our country, the generation that is affected by this law, and whose children will be affected.

We are not asking you to agree with or approve the moral implications of homosexuality, we’re asking you to do your job, to protect the constitution.  As majority leader Harry Reid said, anyone who is willing to fight for this country should have the same civil opportunities to do so as anyone else.  It is my believe that no one person is more valuable than another.

Air Force Major Mike Almy was discharged under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell while serving 6 years in Iraq and a total of 13 years in the air force.

I spent some time with him recently talking about his story with other soldiers.  He said to me “During my time in the air force, when I fought for my country, I never identified myself as anything other than a soldier.”

Just like you, Senator McCain, a distinguished veteran who loves his country, Mike would have done anything during his time of duty to protect America.

Sergeant First Class Army Stacey Vasquez, after 12 years of service, was outed by the wife of a cadet to whom she gave negative reports  based on his bad performance in the unit.  West Point Cadet Katie Miller opted to leave West Point Academy because she felt pressured to mask her identity in school  The most shocking discovery for me was to hear them all say how much they missed serving and protecting our nation, how they joined the armed forces because they believe in America.

Senators, when you’re sending our men and women into war,  when you’re sending our wives, husbands, sons and daughters into combat, will you honour their service?

Will you support repealing this law on Tuesday, and pledge to them that no American’s life is more valuable than another?

For those watching that would like to reach out to their senators and ask for their vote to repeat Don’t Ask Don’t Tell you can log onto www.sldn.org/gaga or you can call 202-224-3121, like I’m going to do right now.

[Ringing] Hi can I please be transferred to Chuck Shumer’s office? [More ringing.  It rings and rings and rings for maybe two minutes while Lady Gaga waits.]

[Busy Signal]

[Lady Gaga hits redial?]

Recorded Voice: Your call has been forwarded to an Automated Voice Message system.  The mail box belonging to Senator [indiscernible]’s office is full.  Good-bye.

Lady Gaga: I have called both of the senators that operate in my district.  I will not stop calling until I reach them and I can leave them this message.

I am a constituent of the senator, My name is Stefanie Joanne Angelina Germinotta, also known as Lady Gaga.

I am calling to ask the Senator to vote with Senators Harry Reid and Carl Levin to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and oppose John McCain’s shameless filibuster. We need to do this, for our Gay and Lesbian soldiers, and finally repeal, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

Try calling after 9 a.m. tomorrow morning.  I’ll be on the phone too.  Thank you. God Bless.

PS: Levin is from Michigan, and he rawks. I emailed Stupak this past week about DADT, despite his other less favorable qualities, he is in favor of this repeal. Good for him.

Lord Voldemort as portrayed by Ralph Fiennes, gritting his teeth together and squinting his eyes. Text reads "heart you billy corgan!" with a "<3" to mean a heart.Happy Monday!

There was a nice thunderstorm today, which, while it spoiled our pool plans, did have a nice calming effect on some other parts of me today. *LOVE* Thunderstorms.

I dedicate this MRT to the Smashing Pumpkins concert which we will NOT be attending because I refuse to pay the obscene amount of money being asked for the tickets to go see Billy Corgan and the people who are not James, D’arcy and Jimmy. Love Billy’s voice as I do (and as much as I would love to reminisce about how he was indeed my high school fantasy boyfriend…), I voted no.

On with it.

  1. Good Stuff — Shakira
  2. Falling In Love (In Hard On The Knees) — Aerosmith
  3. Hey Bulldog — Alice Cooper (From Butchering the Beatles)
  4. Superfast Jellyfish (featuring Gruff Rhys & De La Soul) — Gorrillaz
  5. Away — Breaking Benjamin
  6. Dirrty — Christina Aguilera Featuring Redman
  7. Seven Days to the Wolves — Nightwish
  8. Hottrack — MC 몽 (Mong)
  9. You’re Out — Wonder Girls
  10. My Blue Heaven — Smashing Pumpkins

Video:

Cover of “Landslide” sung by Billy Corgan (Lyrics) in a long-sleeved t-shirt with a giant spider on it (I swear I have that shirt in short-sleeved! Oh Billy!) with his iconic shaved head, playing the acoustic guitar.

This one I remember quite distinctly from my youth, sitting entranced seeing my favorite song performed live. At that point in my life I wasn’t sure if I wanted to kiss D’arcy or be D’arcy. I had a lot of undisclosed emotions back then and no one to talk to them about.

Video: “Tonight, Tonight” The Smashing Pumpkins (Lyrics) live at the MTV Music Awards in 1996, playing with an orchestra, and a projection of space scenes flowing in the background. Corgan, bald again, is wearing a black,floor-length something or another with a star-theme on it that almost glows in the dark. D’arcy and James are wearing creme coloured outfits, James a swingin suit with his awesome hair, and D’arcy a knee-length dress that I tried to find for a dance that year. Her hair is awesome and swept up. The drummer of course is wearing black, because drummers get no love and should be invisible, even if in this song there are some righteous runs.

OK. I’m done.

Enjoy and have a great week.

Picture of Tom Hulce as Mozart in Amadeus. A pale man is leaning over the top of a pool table in a long-sleeved white shirt with a ruffled sleeve writing feverishly on stave paper with a quill. An ink pot is at his elbow, and a what appears to be a tennis ball is in front of him. Several other pieces of sheet music are scattered around him. The caption reads "Mozart had a few minutes before his next game, so he finished Symphony No. 25, tossed off Horn Concerto No. 3 [in E-flat] and put in a little thought on that pesky Requiem Mass that Masked Dude asked for.

I just did an enormous photo dump from my camera and am in the process of updating my Picasa albums. One of my favourite things in life is cataloging every moment that I can remember to get into the SLR. I hope to get some time this week to do a few photo dump posts here to catch you up on what is going on with us, because Seoul has been good to us, and we are loving every moment of soaking up the sun, dust, and monsoon season.

In the meantime, shall we kick off the week?

  1. Breakdown — Breaking Benjamin
  2. Lay It Down — Aerosmith
  3. Come Sing Me A Song — Sing-Sing
  4. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! — Mamma Mia! (Korean Cast Recording)
  5. Journey — Open Arms
  6. No Love No More — J.Y. Park (JYP)
  7. Harder Better Faster Stronger — Daft Punk (Jess & Crabbe Remix)
  8. Nobody — Wonder Girls
  9. Witch — Cold
  10. I Could Not Ask For More — Sarah Evans

Video: Wonder Girls “Nobody” (A favorite of mine) (I will elaborate on Wikipedia’s description)

The video starts with a music group which is a Korean male singer with a group of five women backup singers performing a song (which is an actual song of his called “Honey”). The singer is Park Jin-Young, (JYP as he is known), a notable Korean music star. They are singing on a stage with a band to a live audience. You are supposed to get the feeling that it is a 1960s Motown-style concert, and possibly set in the actual 1960.

After the concert, some music executives bring JYP some sheet music for a song called “Nobody”, and he sits down to a piano and plunks out the tune and gives it a whirl, preparing it for the next show.

Just before the next show, JYP wanders into a men’s bathroom and does his business to discover that there is no toiler paper. He calls out in Korea “Is nobody there?”, but there is no one to help him.

On stage, the music execs are standing around nervously wondering where the heck he is, and finally motion to the five backup singers to come to center stage with their microphones as the music begins. The bust out with “Nobody”, and they are instantly a smash hit, dancing and singing and rotating to show off how each of them are equally talented. The video goes through a montage to show how the career of The Wonder Girls takes them to instant celebrity status.

One of the Wonder Girls is a talented rapper, and she busts out with some of that towards the end as well.

Then JYP comes out and takes a bow.

At the end of the video JYP again wanders into a bathroom, checking for toiler paper and seeing some, but pulls off the last square, and once again has to call for help.

Lyrics (in English, see Romanized Korean here):

You know I still love you, baby
And it will never change, saranghae

I want nobody, nobody but you
I want nobody, nobody but you
How can I be with another? I don’t want any other
I want nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody

Why are you trying to, to make me leave ya
I know what you’re thinking, baby why aren’t you listening?
How can I just, just love someone else
And forget you completely when I know you still love me?

Telling me you’re not good enough
My life with you is just too tough
You know it’s not right, so just stop and come back, boy
How can this be when we were meant to be?

I want nobody, nobody but you
I want nobody, nobody but you
How can I be with another? I don’t want any other
I want nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody

I want nobody, nobody but you
I want nobody, nobody but you
How can I be with another? I don’t want any other
I want nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody

Why can’t we just, just be like this?
‘Cause it’s you that I need and nothing else until the end
Who else can ever make me feel the way
I, I feel when I’m with you, no one will ever do

Telling me you’re not good enough
My life with you is just too tough
You know me enough, so you know what I need, boy
Right next to you is where I need to be

I want nobody, nobody but you
I want nobody, nobody but you
How can I be with another? I don’t want any other
I want nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody

I want nobody, nobody but you
I want nobody, nobody but you
How can I be with another? I don’t want any other
I want nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody

I don’t want nobody, body
I don’t want nobody, body
Honey, you know it’s you that I want
It’s you that I need, why can’t you see?

I want nobody, nobody but you
I want nobody, nobody but you
How can I be with another? I don’t want any other
I want nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody

I want nobody, nobody but you
I want nobody, nobody but you
How can I be with another? I don’t want any other
I want nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody

[Rap]
Back to the days when we were so young and wild and free
Nothing else mattered other than you and me, so tell me why can’t it be?
Please let me live my life my way
Why do you push me away?
I don’t want nobody nobody nobody nobody but you

Have a great week, y’all.

Who needs some tunes?

I do!

Let’s jump right in!

  1. If I Could Turn Back Time — Cher
  2. Is It Just Me? — The Darkness
  3. Birdhouse in Your Soul — They Might Be Giants
  4. I Don’t Think I Love You — Hoobastank
  5. Bicycle — Queen
  6. Ordinary Day — Vanessa Carlton
  7. Dig — Incubus
  8. So Nice So Smart — Kimya Dawson
  9. Joy — VNV Nation
  10. Get Mine, Get Yours — Christina Aguilera

Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” is one of my favourite song/video combinations of all time. The song is one of my favourite car tunes, and it has been a good cry tune for me many times over. I think the video even added a bit of romance to my decision to join the Navy. The idea of being in a port somewhere, being showered with respect for a job well done by someone so kick-ass like Cher… well… that is that is another thought for another time. No sense dwelling on what wasn’t to be…

The video description, in part, from Wikipedia:

“If I Could Turn Back Time” takes place on board the USS Missouri, where Cher sings to a large group of sailors. This video was filmed on July 1, 1989 while the ship was stationed at the former Long Beach Naval Shipyard at Pier D along with the crew. In the music video, the band plays amidships, and the whole vessel is rigged with spotlights, light racks and strobes. The crew is on the deck, waving with the rhythm.

Cher’s outfit for the original video (a fishnet body stocking under a very revealing black one-piece bathing suit) caused some controversy, and many television networks refused to show the video. In 1989 the MTV network banned the video and later played it only after 9 p.m. Cher is said to have commented while on set that originally when she agreed to wear the outfit, the sailors were not to be present. A “censored” video, including new scenes, and showing less explicitly sexual content than the previous original video was then made.

I never really found it too sexually explicit…even the outfit, really. So she rode a deck cannon and bumped her butt up against a few people. We do that while sock skating in the kitchen to Kelly Clarkson songs (or Britney…depends on what’s on really).

Lyrics, via Sing365:

If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that have hurt you
And you’d stay

I don’t know why I did the things I did
I don’t know why I said the things I said
Pride’s like a knife, it can cut deep inside
Words are like weapons, they wound sometimes
I didn’t really mean to hurt you
I didn’t wanna see you go
I know I made you cry
But baby

CHORUS
If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that have hurt you
And you’d stay
If I could reach the stars
I’d give them all to you
Then you’d love me, love me
Like you used to do
If I could turn back time

My world was shattered, I was torn apart
Like somebody took a knife
And drove it deep in my heart
When you walked out that door
I swore that I didn’t care
But I lost every thing darling then and there
Too strong to tell you I was sorry
Too proud to tell you I was wrong
I know that I was blind, and darling

CHORUS

If I could turn back time
If I could turn back time
If I could turn back time, Baby
I didnt really mean to hurt you
I didn’t wanna see you go
I know I made you cry

CHORUS

A white dude pokes his finger (unwiesly) in Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi's face with a very "I'm so much better than you" look on his face while Mr. Miyagi keeps his cool, and Ralp Macchio as the would be Karate Kid is in the background. Text reads (left side) "Losers ALWAYS try to prove they're not losers." (right side) "Badasses NEVER need to prove that they're badasses." Pretty apt, I thougth.
